    BILBAO / BILBO (Bizcaya)

A city that shines with its own light opens up a new world of emotions.
Different places, different landscapes, different people......all with the same charm.
The precise origins of Bilbao have not been determined. However, a settlement had already been established and had significantly developed on both banks of the "ría del Nervión" before it officially became a villa. It was Don Diego López de Haro, Lord of Vizcaya, who gave the city his title in the year 1300, due to its great importance as a commercial and maritime centre at the time.
At the beginning of the 20th century, Bilbao was the great economic icon of the Basque Country and amongst the most important cities in the State. Its outstanding expansion and significant cultural development would only be interrupted by the Civil War (1936-1939), but the city would soon recover its capacity to generate wealth, becoming an attractive area for immigrants searching for a job in its flourishing industry. The urban and industrial landscapes would change to face rapid expansion, growing beyond the city's boundaries and reaching neighboring towns on both sides of the ría del Nervión, thus forming today's Great Bilbao.
Apart from the obligatory stop at the Guggenheim Museum (1997), a visit to the Santiago Cathedral (1400), and a visit to the Arriaga Theatre (1890) will help the visitor to get to know the history and culture of Bilbao.

Bizcaya, the province, is an excellent location for recreation and tourism, with many little rural hotels like el Molino de Aspilza spread along the province for the visitor's enjoyment.

You can also visit Guernica, a highly symbolic basque town and internationally well known for the famous Picasso's painting "The Guernica", Bermeo, one of the most painteresque and important fishing villages with many excelent seafood restaurants like Asador Pelotari, Marquina, land of Jai-Alai players,   La Puebla de Bolivar place of origin of Simon Bolivar "El Libertador", etc, are some of the many points of interest in the province.

La Rioja is divided into three sub-zones: Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Baja, the most famous wineries or Bodegas are located in the first two.

We have made a good selection to visit from the wineries of Rioja Alavesa.

You will find very different bodegas in Rioja Alavesa, bodegas built in a farm that was part of a medieval monastery and still makes its wines in the most traditional way or bodegas that use the hightest technology in the art of wine, etc. Enjoy a typical Spanish lunch in a bodega where sarmientos (dry grape wine branches) are used to roast the meat, giving it a unique and delicious flavor.

Open your senses and prepare to learn in the Interactive Thematic Center dedicated to wine in Laguardia, Villa Lucia or the New Museum of Wine Culture Dinastia Vivanco.

Art and history are well represented in the human heritage Monastery Complex of Suso and Yuso in San Millan de la Cogolla (X century village) were spanish language (castellano) was born.

Enjoy a walk in the walled village of Laguardia (XIII century), capital of Rioja Alavesa. Underneath the stone paved streets and homes of Laguardia there is a maze of underground cellars and over them there are many historic monuments and sites like the Gothic Façade of Santa Maria de los Reyes church (XIV century ), archeological excavations of Poblado de la Hoya (2000 AC), etc.
